2023 - 2024 SEASON IS CLOSED
A Message from Program Director Chris D'Angelo
ShredVets,
Due to mother nature dealing us some warm, rainy weather, we've canceled our last few events. Unless we get a major freak spring snowstorm (which I don't anticipate), we won't be heading out for anymore events this season. That said, here's a quick recap of the 2024 skiing/riding season.
We had five great days on the slopes, one being a partner event with Guardian Revival at Thunder Ridge in mid February. It turned out to be an awesome afternoon with around 35 participants including family members in attendance. We will likely do more partner events with Guardian Revival in the future.
We presented Laszlo Vajtay (the owner of Plattekill mountain) with a VFW Bronze Citizenship Medal to show our appreciation for his unending support for veterans and to our snowsports program. He is truly a patriot and an all around great person.
We also presented Windham mountain club with a flag (and certificate) that was flown over the US on a 105th Airlift Wing C-17.
Catamount ski area had offered their support for us to come up and ski/ride this season but mother nature had other plans and we ended up canceling. We'll get up there next year for sure!
On behalf of Jeff and myself, I want to thank everyone for supporting this amazing program and if you didn't make it out for an event this season, I hope you can come out next year.
I know you all will get out there and enjoy some warm weather sports now that spring is here!
Be well, stay healthy and please don't forget to do buddy checks on your fellow veterans.
If you have any suggestions or questions regarding fundraising or social media for the program, please reach out to myself, Jeff Moseman or Breezy Grenier individually.
Regards to all,
Chris D’Angelo

PLATTEKILL MOUNTAIN OWNER RECEIVES VFW AWARD
16 February 2024: News Release. Plattekill Mountain Owner Receives VFW Award

Today we had the honor of presenting Laszlo Vajtay, the owner of @plattekill_mtn, the VFW Bronze Citizenship Medal on behalf of @hvshredvets!
The VFW Bronze Citizenship Medal is presented to citizens in recognition of their local patriotic activites or outstanding qualities of citizenship.
Laszlo, his family, and his team at Plattekill are the definition of true patriots and are more than deserving of the honor.
Without the support from Laszlo and #Plattekill, #ShredVets would not have grown into the organization and Veteran support group we are today!
We thank him from the bottom of our hearts for the support and service he has provided.

THE 10TH MOUNTAIN DIVISION- THE SKI INDUSTRY CATALYST
The 10th mountain division was a major influence on the ski industry in Colorado and the post-war ski economy. Their influence increased the popularity of the sport, creating Ski Resorts in Colorado, and impacting nearly every part of the industry. The ski industry would have never taken off after World War II if it was not for the 10th Mountain veterans.
THE US SKI RESORTS BUILT BY WW2 SOLDIERS
In 1943, the US Army established the 10th Mountain Division: the US' only combat unit dedicated to alpine warfare. One of the most enduring legacies of the division's veterans is how they helped popularize skiing in the US. In addition to Vail, former members of the 10th Division founded or were affiliated with some 60-odd ski resorts across the US, including Stratton, Whiteface, and Aspen.
